BC Clark Jewelers is a full-service jeweler that currently operates three stores in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The company, founded in Purcell, Indian Territory in 1892, claims to be "Oklahoma's oldest jeweler."[1] Today, the company operates three locations in Oklahoma City.
BC Clark is most well-known for its iconic "Anniversary Sale" jingle, which was originally written and produced in 1956 at a cost of $300. [2] The jingle is played in Television, Radio and Internet advertisements for the retailer's five-week advertising campaign during the holiday shopping season, always starting during the evening on Thanksgiving Day, ending during evening on Christmas Day, what had originally started out as a simple advertisement jingle has grown to became something much more than that, over the years since it first hit the airwaves across Oklahoma in 1956, the Jingle has evolved over time into Oklahoma’s very own Christmas carol and an icon with a life all its own. In 1961 BC Clark produced a new "Anniversary Sale" jingle thinking the original one was dated and had run its course. It was quickly replaced with the old familiar iconic one within hours, after a barrage of complaints from Oklahomans with phones ringing off the hook at the BC Clark offices. One small adjustment did have to be made however in 1977 when television commercials went from 60 seconds to 30 seconds. Originally 35 seconds long, the line “The Christmas wish of BC Clark is to keep on pleasing you” had to be edited from the original song in order to make it fit. In January of 2001, the jingle made its national television debut when actress Megan Mullally, who grew up in Oklahoma City, sang the Jingle on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. On December 24, 2016, the Jingle gained even more national attention when it was a feature story on NBC Nightly News. The story included another famous Oklahoma native – country music superstar, and star of NBC’s The Voice, Blake Shelton who sang a few lines of it. on November 13, 2017, Oklahoma native and winner of twelfth season of America's Got TalentDarci Lynne & Petunia sing the Jingle performing for the entire BC Clark family of employees at their annual employee dinner, in celebration of the 125th Anniversary for the company. It has even been sent to Oklahoma service men and women serving overseas, sung on airplanes full of homesick Oklahomans, used to lighten the mood at church services, performed at school Christmas pageants, and it has even become a standard at many holiday songfests and concerts. According to the company, the jingle "may be the longest continuously running jingle in the entire United States."[3] The jingle is seen as somewhat of a local holiday tradition by many who are from or live in Oklahoma City and the surrounding areas who are used to hearing the mid-1950s recording during the holidays.[4] There is even a website dedicated exclusively to the Jingle via BC Clarks website, where you can learn about the history, view videos of commercial spots from over the years, download the Jingle for your ringtone, view the sheet Music, and read and submit stories or memories of how the BC Clark Jingle has impacted you and the lives of others.
