Ralph Hartzler Fox (né le 24 mars 1913 à Morrisville et mort le 23 décembre 1973 à Philadelphie) est un mathématicien américain, spécialiste de la théorie des nœuds. Professeur de topologie différentielle à l'université de Princeton, il a dirigé les travaux de nombreux chercheurs.

Ralph Fox a étudié au Swarthmore College pendant deux ans. Il a obtenu une maîtrise à l'université Johns-Hopkins et un Ph. D. à l'université de Princeton sous la direction de Solomon Lefschetz en 1939, avec une thèse intitulée On the Lusternik Schnirelmann Category^[1]. Ralph Fox a dirigé 21 thèses de doctorat, dont celles de John Milnor, John Stallings, Francisco González-Acuña, Guillermo Torres-Diaz et Barry Mazur.

Ses contributions mathématiques comprennent le n-coloriage de Fox (en), l'arc de Fox-Artin (en) et le calcul différentiel libre (en). Il a également identifié la topologie compacte-ouverte sur les espaces fonctionnels comme étant particulièrement appropriée en théorie de l'homotopie.

En plus de ses contributions de mathématiques pures, on lui doit l'introduction de plusieurs termes de base dans la théorie des nœuds : les concepts de nœud bordant, nœud ruban (en) et fibré de Seifert apparaissent dans ses travaux, ainsi que la surface de Seifert.

Il aussi popularisé le jeu de go à la fois à Princeton et à l'Institute for Advanced Study.

Ralph Fox a été conférencier invité au Congrès international des mathématiciens de 1950 à Cambridge^[2].
