Hassan Dalhat – A Distinguished Educationist, Bureaucrat, and Traditional Ruler

Hassan Dalhat (born December 31, 1936) is a Nigerian educationist, civil servant, and traditional ruler. He served as the second headmaster of Kaura Primary School, Zaria City, in the 1960s, succeeding Shehu Idris, who later became the Emir of Zazzau. Dalhat later transitioned into public administration, holding senior positions in the Kaduna State Civil Service. In 2011, he was conferred with the traditional title of Cigarin Zazzau and previously served as the District Head of Sabon Birnin-Daji in Kaduna State.


Early Life and Education

Hassan Dalhat was born in Kakaki Quarters, Zaria, Nigeria. He was the third and last child of Hajiya Fatima Dalhatu (1905–1998) and the seventh child of Alkali Dalhatu Muhammad (1885–1956), a High Court Judge (Alkali) who served in Anchau-Takalafiya and Makarfi, both in present-day Kaduna State.

After the death of his father in April 1956, Dalhat’s elder brother, Bashir Dalhatu, became his guardian, while his older sibling Maccido Dalhatu (also spelled Maccido Dalhat) (1932–2012) played a significant role as his mentor, confidant, and guide.

Maccido Dalhatu was a prominent Nigerian bureaucrat who served as Permanent Secretary in the old Kaduna State, then called North-Central State and later Head of Service and Secretary to the Military Government from 1974 to 1979. He was also the Chairman of the Kaduna State Civil Service Commission and later served as Minister for States and Local Government Affairs during the regimes of General Ibrahim Babangida and Interim President, Ernest Shonekan In recognition of his contributions, the Kaduna State Secretariat was renamed in his honour in 2022 by Governor Nasir El-Rufai [1].


Career

Education and Early Career

Dalhat began his career in education, serving as the second headmaster of Kaura Primary School in the 1960s. He succeeded Shehu Idris, who would later become the Emir of Zazzau. During his tenure, he promoted Western and Islamic education in Zaria City and its surrounding communities.

Public Administration

After his career in education, Dalhat joined the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), where he worked as a Station Master. He later transitioned into the Kaduna State Civil Service, holding several administrative positions. His work in public service was characterized by policy implementation, civil service administration, and governance reform.

On December 30, 2011, Dalhat was conferred with the traditional title of Cigarin Zazzau by the then Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris.


Traditional Leadership and Contributions

As the District Head of Sabon Birnin-Daji, Dalhat was actively involved in community development. He advocated for education, social welfare, and economic empowerment in rural communities. He was particularly known for supporting Islamic and Western education in his district.

Throughout his tenure, Dalhat played a role in local governance, dispute resolution, and community leadership, contributing to the stability and development of the region.


Personal Life

Hassan Dalhat is married to two wives and has ten children. He remains a respected figure in the Zazzau Emirate, known for his contributions to education, governance, and traditional leadership.


Recognition and Legacy

Dalhat’s career in education, civil service, and traditional leadership has been recognized in Kaduna State and the Zazzau Emirate. His leadership in Sabon Birnin-Daji and his advocacy for education and community welfare have left a lasting impact.

His older brother, Maccido Dalhatu, remains an influential figure in Nigerian history. In 2012, following his passing, tributes were paid by national leaders for his role in Nigeria’s civil service and governance [2].
