Anel Ahmedhodžić (Bosnian pronunciation: [ǎnel ǎxmedxodʒitɕ]; born 26 March 1999) is a professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for EFL Championship club Sheffield United. Born in Sweden to Bosnian parents, he plays for the Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team.

Ahmedhodžić started his professional career at Nottingham Forest, before joining Malmö FF in 2019. In his first season at Malmo, he was loaned to Danish Superliga team Hobro IK. He appeared frequently for Malmö in the 2020 and 2021 Allsvenskan seasons before joining Bordeaux on loan in January 2022. In the summer of 2022, he moved to Championship team Sheffield United and won promotion with them to the Premier League in his first season.

Club career

Early career

Ahmedhodžić started playing football at his hometown club Malmö FF, before joining the youth academy of English team Nottingham Forest in January 2016.^[3] He made his professional debut against Newcastle United on 30 December at the age of 17.^[4]

Malmö FF

In January 2019, Ahmedhodžić returned to Malmö FF on a three-year deal.^[5] He made his official debut for the side against AIK on 30 June.^[6]

In July, he was sent on a season-long loan to Danish outfit Hobro IK, but was recalled in January 2020.^[7] On 21 July, he scored his first professional goal against Esbjerg.^[8]

In April 2020, Ahmedhodžić signed a new three-year contract with Malmö FF.^[9] On 5 August, he scored his first goal for the side in a triumph over Helsingborg.^[10] He won his first trophy with the club on 8 November, when they were crowned league champions.^[11]

On 14 September 2021, Ahmedhodžić debuted in UEFA Champions League against Juventus.^[12]

In January 2022, he was loaned to French outfit Bordeaux until the end of season.^[13]

Sheffield United

In July, Ahmedhodžić was transferred to Sheffield United for an undisclosed fee.^[14] He made his competitive debut for the team on 6 August against Millwall.^[15] On 17 August, he scored his first goal for Sheffield United in a victory over Sunderland.^[16]

International career

After representing Sweden at all youth levels, Ahmedhodžić made his senior international debut in a friendly game against Moldova on 9 January 2020.^[17] However, in August, he decided that he would play for Bosnia and Herzegovina in the future.^[18]

In September, his request to change sports citizenship from Swedish to Bosnian was approved by FIFA.^[19] Later that month, he received his first senior call-up, for UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying play-offs against Northern Ireland and 2020–21 UEFA Nations League games against the Netherlands and Poland.^[20] He debuted against Northern Ireland on 8 October.^[21]

On 12 October 2021, in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ukraine, Ahmedhodžić scored his first senior international goal.^[22]

Ahmedhodžić announced a temporary pause from international football on 11 September 2024. In an interview conducted with N1, he stated that insults received through social networks, and improper care by the national team's medical staff of his leg injury, influenced his decision to not play in the "near future".^[23] A couple of days later, the technical director of the national team, Emir Spahić, claimed that Ahmedhodžić's actions "insulted the entire nation" and determined that his national team career was over.^[24]

Personal life

In September 2024, Ahmedhodžić released a statement on social media announcing he had severed ties with his father. This followed his father's claim's that his son's wife had cast black magic on the player.^[25]
