Serhiy Osachuk
Sergii Dmytrovych Osachuk (Ukrainian: Сергій Дмитрович Осачук; born 7 June 1972[1]) is a Ukrainian officer, public servant and historian. Since 2022, he has been a member of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, actively participating in the Russian-Ukrainian war. Osachuk holds the rank of colonel. He served as Governor of Chernivtsi Oblast from 2019 to 2022. BiographyIn 1994, Osachuk graduated from the University of Chernivtsi.[1] He is a PhD in History Science and a senior researcher at the University of Chernivtsi.[1] In 2010, Osachuk ran for the Chernivtsi City Council.[2] Since 2013, he served as an Honorary Consul to Austria.[3] He speaks English and German fluently.[4] ControversiesBeing one of the best historians of the region, Sergii Osachuk devoted a lot of time to researching and writing scientific works, in particular about the history of Bukovyna. All of his works are supported by documentary data obtained from archives in various European countries. One of the main emphases in his research was on the peaceful coexistence of different ethnic groups and cultures of Bukovyna, setting them as an example for today's generation of Bukovynians. He repeatedly initiated discussions on the historical past of Bukovyna, inviting historians from Ukraine, Romania, Austria, and Germany. At the same time, discreditation campaigns were regularly conducted against Sergii Osachuk, primarily by political rivals and groups trying to hinder his scientific work. One of these campaigns was his accusation of not recognizing the mass shooting of Romanians in the village of Bila Krynytsia, although Sergii Osachuk stated that the shooting in Bila Krynytsia was a tragedy not only for the Romanian but also for the Ukrainian people.
