I hope it wasn't too much of a bother to you, me jumping into a new page like that.
I have a new pages feed set up, and do like tidying up new articles. I noticed that your edit summary in the initial version of the article mentioned that it was translated from the Hebrew Wikipedia. In accordance with the inter wiki licence requirements, a translation does require attribution, which I added in the article talk-page a bit later. I also noticed that the initial version of the article didn't appear to enough reliable sources. (I think I probably have a personal opinion about what constitutes a reliable source that's more strict that the official policy. As faults go, I think that's a good fault to have.) So I added the Jerusalem Post reference. This also meant it would avoid having a {{Db-person}} "WP:A7" speedy deletion tag added to the page, as users who patrol new pages - people like me, for example - sometimes do without googling up things.
I do note that some of the references are still what might not be considered reliable sources for a biography of a living person:

• http://www.cityvineyardnyc.com is a website about a venue that would probably not pass the WP:CORPDEPTH test for a Wikipedia article
• http://yellowsubmarine.org.il, the same
• I suspect http://dugrinet.co.il/ may also be the same
• Last.fm and Bandcamp are user-generated content websites, and should almost always not be used as references.

Thanks, but it's news to me. This type of predictive error fixing is very difficult in some languages, as the Hamming distances are so short in the spelling of many similar words. The only way to do it is by analysis of the context for the whole sentence. That can be done in two ways, either making a 'smart' parser which understands grammar (there might be a common misspelling between two words, but if one is a noun and the other a verb then picking the wrong one would often give a grammatically invalid sentence). However the more popular way to do machine language these days (Google Translate seems to be using it with success) is to have a dumber process, which takes a simpler, statistically-based approach based on much greater quantities of source text to learn from.

Either of these need to collect a large corpus of correct spellings, and these might need to be quite long, i.e. full sentences in order to give enough context. But how that relates to these pages would be a question for Uziel302, not me. Andy Dingley (talk) 16:06, 8 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Andy Dingley, I do base on edit distance (Hamming distance is only for cases of equal length). I don't use huge corpus or context analysis, I just randomly offer a word within 1 edit distance, and with long enough words it tends to be accurate on high percentage. In case it isn't accurate, the script has "type" button that pops up input field. All the edits on the project are manual so 20% false positives don't hurt much. I personally see a "[accepted revision]" at the top of the diff, but that may only show for pending changes reviewers. This only happened because the page is under pending changes protection, which is a very small proportion of articles. None of your other edits are pending review. Your edit should have been automatically accepted because you are extended confirmed and the previous edit was accepted (see here), but for some strange reason it was not. I have no idea if it was caused by using the tool or not. You can maybe try editing this test page manually (and with your tool, if it is possible) to see if your edits are automatically accepted or not. Hi Uziel. See the comments at User_talk:Blaze_Wolf#Typo_fix. There appears to be the potential for the Typo tool to identify false errors, which is common in tools, but there doesn't appear to be enough guidance to users on how to avoid or spot or report errors. When I brought the false error to the attention of User:Blaze Wolf they seemed unable to do anything about it, and even though they were the tool user who made the error, they suggested I sort it out. I wasn't expecting you to do anything you couldn't do User:Blaze Wolf, such as change the code, just to take the appropriate steps, such as notifying the person in charge of the tool that there is a false positive. If there are a lot of false positives with the tool, then I am sure that Uziel would like to be made aware of them so that the tool could be improved. Not everyone is able to spot a false positive, so the tool could be introducing silly errors as well as fixing silly errors if the false positives are not reported. One thing that's changed is that 100,000 typos have been fixed, so far fewer remain. As there are still the same number of false positives out there, they now form a far higher proportion of the reports. Another change is that the algorithms, which originally picked off just low-hanging fruit, have been adjusted to include more complex cases which are harder to identify, making false positives more likely. In short, we're running out of typos, which has to be a good thing. Helping out here involves reading the instructions carefully enough to install a script, so it's unlikely that inexperienced editors will do accidental damage. Another factor is that each new page of 250 typos gets reduced to only the difficult cases, which are more likely to need a correction other than that suggested or to be correct already. SilkTork, the tool mentions the case where the automatic offer is not right: "Type: if the offered replacement isn't accurate, you can type the right replacement". To anyone using the tool it is obvious the automatic offers are far from being accurate in high percentage. The tool is intentionally not making any automatic edits, every edit is done by human editors and its their responsibility to make sure they make accurate edits. I'm not sure how active the CTIOC project is from a development point of view but, if you are looking for improvements, I would like to suggest one.

I have noticed recently that many false positives are caused by highly specific words unique to that article, such as a chemistry term or company name. The vast majority of the time, the 'typo' appears in the articles title.

Would it be possible to prevent marking a word as a typo if it is contained within the title of the article?

rbstrachan, it is possible and was suggested in the past, but I decided to keep this type of words, because in many cases the name from the title is missing capitalization in the article. I know there are some multiword titles where you can find the word in lowercase in the title itself, but those cases are relatively rare in the project. In general, my approach is to treat less edge cases in the code and have more data, and by dismissing a word that appeared in the title, this word won't come up in next scans even if it appears in other articles. Anyway, thanks for the offer. I am thinking about creating additional data points to help deciding what is a typo, e.g. getting google search count, the existence of the word on Wiktionary, the existence in article names, etc. but for now I don't have the time for it. They are the worst type of brochure articles, hence the reason I sent two of them to Afd. They are advertisements. Those public sources are just the routine coverage, most of which is generated from the company itself, because it a startup and before it existed, nobody knew anything about, so its all self-generated. I would advise you not to create these types of articles. They have no place on Wikipedia. Keep it off Wikipedia. When you say your interested in it, fair enough, but Wikipedia is not place for them unless it is a public company. A private company needs to have really wide coverage that satisfies WP:SIRS before it can considered notable. Hi, I have been cleaning up Category:Pages transcluding nonexistent sections and noticed that your javascript page is showing up in the category. This is because the backend software is parsing the curly braces as templates. An easy way to fix this is to put

There is an Esperanto-related hackathon coming up in a couple weeks: July 18th to 26th. In case it's not too late to suggest a project, I was thinking of proposing that it focus on the improvement of the Esperanto Wikipedia (Vikipedio). Spelling correction is one possibility. Given enough developers, there might be others.

Here are some resources I've come across that might be helpful for adapting "Correct a typo in one click" (WP:CTIOC) to another language.

• The source code at systematic-editing repo
• The JS that was until recently at Wikipedia:Correct_typos_in_one_click
• wikitech::Help:Toolforge/Quickstart

Are there any other resources or advice to consider? Is there a repo with the code that WP:CTIOC uses to read in Wiktionary and any other data?

BTW, it looks like WP:CTIOC mutates known words to find candidate misspellings. Almost all words in Esperanto are formed by combining roots with each other, and adding affixes (prefixes, infixes, and suffixes). The reverse process---starting with a word and stripping off the affixes to uncover the roots is usually called word segmentation---could be used as a signal to check whether a word might be misspelled.

Dotyoyo, thanks for the offer, adding new language is quite simple in my setup, but it can be complicated for me to teach others how to do so. I currently don't use Wiktionary to generate the list of popular words, but this project: https://github.com/IlyaSemenov/wikipedia-word-frequency/ and it currently doesn't have Esperanto in it, so if someone in the hackathon or regardless can generate list according to this project's technique, I would be glad to run a scan like I did with the languages currently in the project (en, ru, de, fr, es), I wanted to do the whole list of 20 the project currently have but got distracted by work... Hi, thanks for https://typos.toolforge.org ! I admire the UI, I find it a particularly productive interface for batches of small edits. I’d like to make a tool with a similar interface (for fixing pronunciations in the French Wiktionary). I wondered if your source code was public?

I would also have a feature suggestion (that may be a lot of work, I don’t know, but let’s throw the idea): a fair share of the typos found are located in file names (hosted on Commons), such as [[File:Abkhaz latin alpabet from 1930 ABC book.png]] ("alpabet" --> "alphabet"). We can’t just fix the typo in the page because that would break the link, rather we should rename the file on Commons (with a redirect); then we can fix the links to it. Do you think your tool could do that? Or else, avoid signaling errors in this File:... pattern (which varies depending on language, e.g. on the French WP it is Fichier:...). Hello, thanks for developing the typo tool as a Toolforge tool! I just tried it out on the German Wikipedia, and my first two suggestions were "abgeweht" in de:Buchdrucker (Käfer) and "abgewürzt" in de:Kriminalroman. These are (at least morphologically) correct German words, so I wonder whether there could be an option to skip all of their occurrences? 1234qwer, the list of words I used is based on wikipedia-word-frequency, so words like "abgeweht" that appear in de.wikipedia only 3 times, are considered suspicious. I can lower the bar and scan only for words that appear less than that, but then I will miss many repeating typos...

The different dismiss buttons are used for my future scans, if a word is dismissed as "only here", I can still scan for it in other articles, and the difference between foreign and name is mainly to give me some insights, and sometimes tweak the code (for now I skip lines with more than one suspect words because it might be caused by a foreign language line). Sisyph, thanks for the feedback, I already had in the code exclusion of '[[File:' but now I learned that French has different way to write it, so I made the exclusion in the script to be based on '[[' that is followed by ':' on the same line, I ran a new scan on French Wikipedia, excluding all the lines with this format. One remark : I agree with @Sisyph in section above : maybe it would be useful to exclude picture file names : if the typo is in the file name and if we correct it, the link beetwen article and image is broken (I'm sure, I broke myself some...)

At typos.toolforge.org the /about and /stats pages are not working. Also, when you switch from one Wiki that has all the typos handled to another Wiki that doesn't, the text "All the typos were handled! We try to generate new batch once a month" goes from being inside the div "container" to to the div "typo-container" and it so renders very large, but I can correct typos just fine. Rusty, can you be more specific, what doesn't work in those pages? For me both /about and /stats have content. I noticed a bug with those pages when I reload, I get error "Cannot GET /about". I usually solve this problem using .htaccess file, but seems like in this toolforge environment, this file doesn't take effect. So far no one complained about it and I never noticed it, probably because I never did reload on these paths. @Qwerfjkl, the code is taking replacements from db, table named suspects, and tries to replace in the article the value from column suspect and the value from column correction. For that matter, suspect and correction can be any textual change possible in source code editing, not necessarily typos. The part that helps me generate the lists of suspect lives inside "parsers" folder, variant-generator.py helps create lists of potential suspect words, find-words-in-dump.py finds those words in a wiki dump.
